Turn Off Windows Automatic Updates

Windows will automatically download security updates every month. If you are using a connection with limited data, you may want to disable this feature to prevent excessive data consumption. If you disable automatic updates, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED you check for updates periodically and download them when possible. To disable automatic Windows Updates:

Windows 7

  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.

  2. In the left pane, click Change settings.

  3. Under Important updates, choose the option that you want.

  4. Under Recommended updates, select the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updatescheck box, and then click OKAdministrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Windows Vista

  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.

  2. In the left pane, click Change settings.

  3. Choose the option that you want.

  4. Under Recommended updates, select the Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates check box, and then click OKAdministrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
