Refresh Your Mail App Connection (IMAP)

If your iPhone or iPad has stopped syncing messages or displays connection errors, the most effective fix is to remove the account and re-add it. This refreshes the connection to the server without deleting your actual emails.

Step 1: Remove the Existing Account

  1. Open the Settings app on your device.

  2. Scroll down and tap Apps, then tap Mail.

  3. Tap Mail Accounts.

  4. Select the specific email account you wish to remove.

  5. Tap Delete Account (or Sign Out) at the bottom.

  6. Confirm by tapping Delete from My iPhone.

Note: If using IMAP connection type this only removes the mail from your device. Your emails remain safe on the SmarterMail server and will reappear once you re-add the account.

Step 2: Re-add Your SmarterMail Account

Now that the old connection is cleared, follow these steps to set it up fresh:

  1. In the same Mail Accounts menu, tap Add Account.

  2. Choose Other at the bottom of the list.

  3. Tap Add Mail Account and enter your Name, Full Email Address, and Password. Tap Next.

  4. Ensure IMAP is selected at the top.

  5. Enter the Incoming and Outgoing Server information:

    • Hostname: (If you don't know this, use the [Email Setup Wizard])

    • Username: Your full email address.

    • Password: Your email password.

  6. Tap Next to verify the settings.

  7. On the final screen, ensure Mail is toggled ON (green) and tap Save.

Critical Verification Checklist:

  • User Name: This must be your full email address (e.g., user@yourdomain.com), not just the first part.

  • Password: Re-type your password slowly. If you have "Auto-fill" enabled, clear the field first to ensure an old password isn't being used.

  • Host Name: Ensure the Incoming and Outgoing server names match exactly what is in our [Email Setup Wizard].

Stuck on "Verifying"?If your device says "Cannot Verify Server Identity" or "Account Already Exists," double-check that you successfully completed Step 1 (deleting the old account) before starting Step 2.

Step 3: Final Sync

  1. Return to your home screen and open the Mail app.

  2. It may take a few minutes for your folders and messages to populate for the first time.

  3. Optional: If you previously synced your calendar, follow our [KB article for syncing Contacts and Calendars] to restore those features.
